Mike Ashman, writing in the April 2015 Gramophone (page 112) is happy enough with the singers and the orchestra, but he warns of a "relentlessly old-fashioned production" by director Hugo De Ana. For a more modern production, Ashman would prefer the Salzburg Festival production with director Stein and Pappano as conductor. If you happen to have The Opera Gala from Baden-Baden, you can see Vargas (Don Carlo) and Tézier (Rodrigo) sing a famous duet from Don Carlo back in 2007.
