Iphigénie en Aulide and Iphigénie en Tauride

Gluck Iphigénie en Aulide opera to a libretto by Leblanc du Roullet and Iphigénie en Tauride opera to a libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard. Directed 2011 by Pierre Audi at De Nederlandse Opera, the two related operas are presented as a double feature:

Iphigénie en Aulide stars Véronique Gens (Iphigénie), Salomé Haller (Diane), Nicolas Testé (Agamemnon), Anne Sofie von Otter (Clytemnestre), Frédéric Antoun (Achille), Martijn Cornet (Patrocle), Christian Helmer (Calchas), and Laurent Alvaro (Arcas).
Iphigénie en Tauride stars Mireille Delunsch (Iphigénie), Laurent Alvaro (Thoas), Jean-François Lapointe (Oreste), Yann Beuron (Pylade), and Salomé Haller (Diane).

Marc Minkowski conducts Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble & Chorus of De Nederlandse Opera (Chorus Director Martin Wright). Sets by Michael Simon; costumes by Anna Eiermann, lighting by Jean Kalman; dramaturgy by Klaus Bertisch. Directed for TV by Misjel Vermeiren. Both operas sung in French. Released 2013, disc has 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio sound. Grade: NA

This title was called the "Critic's Choice" for videos in the July 2013 issue of Opera News (page 58), and William Braun gave this generally high marks in a detailed review at pages 58-59. Richard Lawrence also praises this production lavishly in the May 3013 Gramophone at pages 108-109.

Feb 25. We have just completed one of our most ambitious reviews: Einstein on the Beach opera, the surreal 4 and 1/2 hour cult legend. Kudos, encomiums, and accolades to Opus Arte for giving us this authoritative and weirdly fascinating recording, which we grade A+. Absorbing and learning Einstein is uniquely challenging. We try to help out by providing aids not included in the keepcase materials: an accurate libretto and a list of segments in the opera with correct Opus Arte time stamps. Good luck!

We have some other good grades with an A for the recent Met The Pearl Fishers (Les pêcheurs de perles) and a B- for an earlier The Pearl Fishers from Naples. Also, we recently gave an A- for the new Don Quixote from the Vienna State Ballet.
