Last and First Men was the last passion project of the Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson before he died in 2018. His vision was to re-imagine the story from the novel of the same name, written by Olaf Stapledon, through a combination of stark visual imagery and modern orchestral music. The visuals by Sturla Brandth Grovlen depict Soviet-era sculptures that still populate the former Yugoslav republics. Johannsson composed most of the music for the film, but Yair Elazar Glotman completed the score after Johannsson’s death.
The narration tells the story of Last and First Men: a future generation of humans coming back to our time to reveal certain truths.
