Per Mark Pullinger at pages 87-88 of the January 2020 Gramophone, Gomes was a Brazilian composer who had four operas premiered at La Scala. In Lo schiavo a rich plantation-owner’s son gets to run off with the beautiful aboriginal slave girl over lots of objections. Pullinger praises the score and the singers, saying that the production is “good by the standard of provincial Italian houses.” In January 2020, this title also received the Gramophone Editor’s Choice for best Blu-ray of the month.
