Verdi Nabucco opera to a libretto by Temistocle Solera. Production created 2019 by Ricci/Forte and directed by Stefano Ricci at the Teatro Regio di Parma. Stars Amartuvshin Enkhbat (Nabucco), Ivan Magri (Ismaele), Michele Pertusi (Zaccaria), Saioa Hernández (Abigaille), Annalisa Stroppa (Fenena), Gianluca Breda (High Priest of Baal), Manuel Pierattelli (Abdallo), and Elisabetta Zizzo (Anna). Francesco Ivan Ciampa conducts the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, the Orchestra Giovanelle della Via Emilia, and the Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma (Chorus Master Martino Faggiani). Set design by Nicolas Bovey; costume design by Gianluca Sbicca; lighting by Alessandro Carletti; choreography by Marta Bevilacqua. Directed for TV by Matteo Ricchetti and Adriano Figari. Sung in Italian. Released 2020, disc has 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio. Grade: NA

Neil Fisher reports in the July 2020 Gramophone, page 79-80, that this is set on a “warship in a dystopian future”, with designs perhaps inspired by Wong Kar-wai’s science fiction movie 2046. This “art installation” approach seems like something you would expect in Brussels or Berlin, but not in Parma. But now, it seems, even the Italians and Dynamic are trying to get out of the ruts of the past and into the issues of the present.
