Please note that The Cellist and The Two Pigeons were originally released with other ROB material not staring Lauren Cuthbertson. For this box set, Opus Arte has created a new disc combining The Cellist and The Two Pigeons.

I don’t pay attentions to prices on this website. But a recent price check suggests you can maybe get Alice in the box here for about the same as the price of the Alice as a single title. Then you get the other 3 discs for peanuts. Don’t get confused: Opus Arte has published 2 different Alice recordings with Cuthbertson starring in both! The title included in this box is my favorite of the two.

This Romeo and Juliet from Opus Arte is the one I call “Romeo and Alice.” When I watch this, I keep wondering, “How did Alice get to old Verona?” It’s now 2022. The Royal Opera Ballet has published the same production of Romeo and Juliet 3 times with different sets of stars! The best of these 3 is the one from 2021 with Ball and Naghdi. Maybe the trick here is to watch Lauren first in Romeo and Juliet. But then, when you watch Alice, will you wonder how Juliet got to England?

Feb 25. We have just completed one of our most ambitious reviews: Einstein on the Beach opera, the surreal 4 and 1/2 hour cult legend. Kudos, encomiums, and accolades to Opus Arte for giving us this authoritative and weirdly fascinating recording, which we grade A+. Absorbing and learning Einstein is uniquely challenging. We try to help out by providing aids not included in the keepcase materials: an accurate libretto and a list of segments in the opera with correct Opus Arte time stamps. Good luck!

We have some other good grades with an A for the recent Met The Pearl Fishers (Les pêcheurs de perles) and a B- for an earlier The Pearl Fishers from Naples. Also, we recently gave an A- for the new Don Quixote from the Vienna State Ballet.
